Poinsettias can be used for autumn floral decorations
The European poinsettia breeders' initiative, Stars for Europe, suggests using poinsettias for autumn decorations rather than waiting for the Christmas season. While typically associated with red, poinsettias are available in various warm tones including apricot, salmon, pink, and orange.
For autumn arrangements, these plants can be paired with elements such as pine branches, eucalyptus, or dried asparagus. They can also be combined with other flora like Calathea, begonias, or orchids to create seasonal bouquets.
To use poinsettias as cut flowers, the initiative recommends cutting the stems at an angle and removing lower leaves. To prevent sap from leaking, stems should be dipped in approximately 60 degree Celsius hot water for five seconds before being placed in cold water. If prepared this way, the flowers can remain fresh for about two weeks.
