Point Reyes Lighthouse offers free housing for volunteers

The United States National Park Service has launched a volunteer program at the Point Reyes Lighthouse in California, offering free accommodation in exchange for work. The opportunity has seen such high interest that applications have already closed.

Selected volunteers will stay at the 150-year-old historic lighthouse from November 6, 2026, to February 1, 2027. The role requires a commitment of 30 hours per week, spread across four days. Responsibilities include welcoming the public, conducting presentations on the lighthouse's history, and explaining the local natural heritage and fauna to visitors.

While the setting offers a scenic coastal landscape, participants must be prepared for winter weather conditions on the California coast, including high winds, heavy fog, humidity, and low temperatures. The lighthouse, which ceased original maritime operations in 1975 after the installation of an automated light, now functions as a museum dedicated to the history of the site and the Coastal National Park.
