Point Reyes National Seashore beach closed after fishing boat runs aground

North Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore was temporarily closed following the grounding of a 58-foot fishing vessel on Friday, August 21. The vessel, which has a total capacity of 2,800 gallons, was estimated to be carrying approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel at the time of the incident.

A unified command has been established involving the US Coast Guard and the National Park Service to manage the response. They are working alongside Marin County Fire, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response.

Officials are currently coordinating with the vessel’s responsible party and a contracted salvage company to safely remove the fuel. As of the latest reports, there have been no reported injuries, active fuel leaks, or impacts to local wildlife. The cause of the grounding remains under investigation.
