Poitiers Merovingian Hypogeum and Stonehenge Offer Rare, Limited Access Visits

The early‑medieval Hypogée des Dunes near Poitiers, a fragile Merovingian burial chamber, opened for a handful of guided tours on 29 July and will repeat limited slots in early August and during the European Heritage Days in September. Protective measures, including a 1908‑era building that shields the sarcophagi from humidity and fungi, restrict visitation to short, reservation‑only periods.

Meanwhile, English Heritage introduced a daily lottery throughout August that selects a single visitor (and a small group) to enter Stonehenge alone for 20 minutes before the site opens to the public. The free, solo experience includes a guide, complimentary breakfast items, and the opportunity to photograph the 5,000‑year‑old stones without crowds. Both initiatives aim to balance public interest with preservation of these iconic monuments.
