Pokémon card designed by six-year-old sells for $156,000

A rare Pokémon card illustrated by Megu Taniguchi when she was six years old sold for $156,000 on September 27 via Fanatics Collect. The card, a 2010 Pokémon Illusion’s Design Contest promotional item for the Zorua release, features artwork of Zorua and Pikachu riding on a bus.

Taniguchi won the kindergarten category of the design contest tied to the film ‘Zoroark: Master of Illusions’. The winning design had an extremely limited print run, with approximately 100 copies originally distributed. This specific copy received a PSA 10 Gem Mint grade, contributing to its high valuation due to its pristine condition.

The sale marks a significant increase in value for this specific promotional asset; a PSA 10 copy previously sold for $8,700 in 2023. The transaction reflects a broader trend in the trading card market where collectors increasingly prioritize rare, limited-edition contest items over mass-produced retail sets.
