Pokémon card indices show significant growth compared to NVIDIA and Bitcoin
New market data indicates that Pokémon trading cards have emerged as a high-performing asset class, with indices tracking their value showing returns comparable to major stocks and cryptocurrencies.
The Card Ladder Pokémon index has multiplied by approximately 40 times its value since early 2019, a growth rate nearly identical to NVIDIA's stock performance over the same period. This index has also outperformed both Bitcoin and gold.
Additionally, the CardTrack 100 index, which tracks the 100 most valuable near-mint Pokémon cards, has risen 152% since September 2021. Within this index, vintage cards printed between 1999 and 2010 have seen a 197% increase. The index has outperformed gold, Bitcoin, the Nasdaq Composite, and the S&P 500 during this timeframe.
Despite these gains, analysts note differences in liquidity and volatility. While the index shows lower annualized volatility than Bitcoin or the S&P 500, selling physical cards involves higher costs, such as grading fees, shipping, and dealer spreads, compared to the near-instantaneous liquidity of traditional stocks.
