Pokémon cards compete with sports memorabilia in high-value auction market

The collectible trading card market continues to see massive valuations, with Pokémon and sports cards competing for top auction prices. Pokémon holds the record for the highest auction price ever paid for a single trading card, following the sale of a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator for $16.492 million through Goldin in February 2026. This transaction was recognized by Guinness World Records.

Sports cards remain a significant force in the high-end memorabilia market. Notable sales include a 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Dual Logoman featuring Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, which sold for $12.932 million in August 2025, and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle that reached $12.6 million in 2022.

The high value of Pokémon cards is attributed to the franchise's broad cultural reach through video games, anime, and merchandise, which fosters deep emotional attachment among collectors. Scarcity driven by tournament prizes, promotional releases, and early printings further fuels the market.
