Pokémon Champions restricts high-level competitive play to Nintendo hardware
Pokémon Champions, the competitive battle simulator from The Pokémon Company, is now available on both smartphones and Nintendo consoles, including the Switch 2. While the game supports cross-play between platforms, official competitive regulations currently restrict high-level tournament play to Nintendo hardware.
Producer Masaaki Hoshino cited the superior graphical quality of the Switch 2 and the logistical challenges of managing a wide variety of mobile devices as the primary reasons for this restriction. Although recent rule updates allow mobile devices in local tournaments, regional and international competitions, such as the Pokémon World Championships, still require Nintendo consoles.
The decision has sparked debate regarding accessibility and technical consistency, especially since the game already utilizes centralized servers for cross-play. Other titles like Pokémon Unite and Pokémon GO allow mobile play in high-level official competitions. Despite the hardware restrictions for pros, the game has seen significant reach, with approximately 25 million total downloads across all platforms.
