Pokrovsky Carbon Polygon to transfer monitoring technologies to Mongolia
The Pokrovsky Carbon Polygon has announced its readiness to transfer carbon monitoring and carbon farming technologies to partners in Mongolia. This announcement follows the team's participation in the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) held in Ulaanbaatar.
A pilot initiative of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Pokrovsky Carbon Polygon is located in the Kaluga Region of Russia. The site specializes in developing measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems for diverse ecosystems, including forests, meadows, and aquatic environments. Its work focuses on measuring the carbon-sequestration capacity of soils and creating digital twins of territories using satellite data, UAVs, LiDAR, and ground-based measurements.
These technologies are considered highly relevant to Mongolia, where natural rangelands cover approximately 70% of the territory. The transfer aims to address widespread rangeland degradation caused by grazing, which impacts vegetation, soil stability, and drought resilience in a region vital to livestock production and food security.
