Poland: CBA detains 25 in Ostrołęka power plant corruption probe

The Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA) has detained 25 people in connection with a large-scale investigation into the Ostrołęka C power plant investment. The probe focuses on potential financial damages caused by incompetence and dereliction of duty by board and supervisory board members of Elektrownia Ostrołęka, Enea SA, and Energa SA during 2018 and 2019.

Financial losses related to the failed coal block project are estimated to exceed 1 billion PLN, with some reports citing figures as high as 1.35 billion PLN. The operation involved searches in 30 locations across 11 provinces. Among those detained is Mirosław Kowalik, the president of Westinghouse Poland, and Grzegorz Ksepko, a representative of the President in the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS).

Authorities also conducted searches at the homes of former Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski and MP Arkadiusz Czartoryski. Tchórzewski, a prominent political supporter of the project, stated that he has nothing to reproach himself for and that no incriminating materials were found during the search.
