Poland accuses social media platforms of being a 'silent ally' to Russia

Polish Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski has accused major social media platforms of acting as a 'silent ally' to Russian disinformation efforts. Speaking at a press conference, Gawkowski stated that platforms are failing to combat the digital warfare waged by Russian bots and the Kremlin's GRU, suggesting that some companies may even profit from the spread of disinformation.

Data from Poland's National Research Institute (NASK) supports these claims. In the first half of 2026, NASK sent over 65,000 reports regarding fake accounts and disinformation to various platforms. However, companies responded to fewer than a quarter of these reports. Specifically, platforms deleted only 7% of the reported fake accounts and disinformation, while applying moderation measures in just over 17% of cases.

Gawkowski has threatened financial sanctions against companies that ignore state requests. He demanded that platforms establish effective, Polish-speaking content moderation teams that maintain real-time links with reporting institutions. Additionally, he called for the immediate removal of identified bot networks and the elimination of what he described as inefficient or 'sham' appeal processes.
