Poland addresses cemetery regulations and memorial concepts
In Poland, new legislative and local initiatives are addressing cemetery management and burial traditions. The Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWiA) has proposed changes to regulate how municipal cemeteries set usage fees. The goal is to provide local governments with a clear legal basis for pricing, following recent administrative court rulings that created interpretive discrepancies regarding what fees can be legally charged.
Simultaneously, in Bielsko-Biała, a petition has been submitted to Mayor Jarosław Klimaszewski proposing the creation of a ‘Memorial Garden’. Unlike traditional cemeteries with rows of tombstones and concrete paths, this concept focuses on a natural landscape featuring trees, shrubs, and discrete memorial plaques. The proposal suggests using urn burials and potentially biodegradable urns, with potential locations being analyzed in areas such as Cygański Las, Kamienica, Olszówka, and Mikuszowice Śląskie.
