Poland addresses traffic management and transport emission policies
The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure has responded to concerns raised by local councilors regarding the impact of heavy vehicle traffic on air quality and public health along the S1 expressway near Żywiec. In response, the Ministry highlighted the implementation of the National Traffic Management System (KSZR) by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. This integrated IT system utilizes roadside devices, cameras, and meteorological stations to monitor traffic density, vehicle speeds, and weather conditions to improve safety and reduce congestion.
Separately, the implementation of Clean Transport Zones (SCT) in Poland has become a highly politicized issue. Maciej Mazur, director of the Polish Association of New Mobility, noted that political disputes have obscured the original environmental goals of these zones, discouraging many local governments from pursuing them. While some cities face hesitation due to the controversy surrounding SCTs, Mazur stated that municipalities are still pursuing alternative environmental measures, such as adjusting parking policies and narrowing streets to limit emissions.
