Poland Allocates Over 400 Million zł to Join EU AI Gigafactory Race

Poland is positioning itself as a Central‑European hub for artificial‑intelligence computing power. The cabinet approved a resolution guaranteeing more than 400 million zł to fund the purchase of compute capacity for a prospective AI gigafactory, giving the country the ability to compete in the European Union tender organised by EuroHPC JU.

The planned facility, part of a wider EU programme to build up to seven AI gigafactories, could exceed 10 billion zł in total private investment. It would host tens of thousands of GPU accelerators, providing high‑performance computing for industry, research, public administration and health care, and is slated to be located near the Vistula River.

Analysts warn that the rapid expansion of data‑centre capacity will sharply increase electricity demand – from about 0.6 TWh in 2024 to an estimated 29.4 TWh by 2040 – and raise water‑use concerns. Environmental groups stress the need for coordinated planning and renewable‑energy integration to avoid stressing Poland’s power grids and water resources during droughts.
