Poland aims to develop sovereign satellite communications system

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced a strategic ambition to develop a “Polish Starlink” to ensure sovereign satellite communications. Speaking at the International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce, Tusk emphasized that independent connectivity is vital for national security, particularly for the military, administration, and critical infrastructure.

While specific details regarding the number of satellites, total costs, or a definitive timeline have not yet been released, the initiative is framed as a move toward greater autonomy in the space sector. Tusk described the project as a “dream, but not a delusion,” noting that Poland is becoming a significant player in the European space industry.

A foundational step in this process has already occurred through an agreement between Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) and the Finnish-Polish company ICEYE. This partnership focuses on satellite technology and solutions for reconnaissance and data acquisition to support defense and security needs.
