Poland and Belarus hold first high-level diplomatic meeting in a decade

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and his Belarusian counterpart, Maxim Ryženkov, held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. This marks the first meeting between top diplomats from both nations in a decade.

Sikorski described the initiative as a “snowdrop” that could bloom if weather conditions remain favorable, suggesting a potential thaw in relations. The meeting follows a period of relative normalization at the border and the recent release of political prisoner Andrzej Poczobut by Belarus. While the Polish government maintains that it recognizes states rather than specific governments, the talks indicate a cautious exploration of de-escalation.

The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the interaction as a “nice restart” but emphasized the need for long-term stability rather than one-off meetings. Analysts suggest the rapprochement may be influenced by broader geopolitical shifts, including potential US interest in easing sanctions in exchange for prisoner releases and discussions regarding potash agreements.
