Poland and China navigate diplomatic and economic tensions
During a reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Warsaw were highlighted through contrasting rhetoric. Chinese Ambassador Lu Shan emphasized economic potential, shared history, and cultural ties, utilizing a ‘win-win’ diplomatic approach.
In response, Polish Secretary of State Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski emphasized Poland’s commitment to human rights and support for Ukraine. This exchange underscores a shift in bilateral relations, which have moved from high expectations in the early 2010s toward a period of cautious chill.
Economic data reveals a significant trade imbalance. In 2024, Chinese exports to Poland totaled approximately 34 billion euros, while Polish exports to China were roughly 3.3 billion euros, resulting in a 31 billion euro deficit—one of the largest in the European Union. While Poland serves as a vital logistics hub, with the Małaszewicze terminal handling about 90 percent of China-EU rail freight, direct Chinese investment in Poland has not met previous strategic promises.
