Poland and Hyundai Rotem face delays in K2PL tank production

Industrial negotiations between Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) and Hyundai Rotem regarding the K2PL tank program are facing significant challenges, potentially delaying the domestic assembly and technology transfer process in Poland.

While the Polish military already operates over 200 Korean-made K2 tanks from a 2022 agreement, a subsequent contract signed in August 2025 involves the delivery of 180 additional units. This newer agreement includes 64 tanks in the K2PL configuration, which are intended to facilitate the transfer of manufacturing, maintenance, and repair technologies to the Polish defense industry.

Key points of contention include the final assembly of 61 K2PL models at Bumar-Łabędy and the determination of where K2 engines will be serviced. PGZ has recommended Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne in Poznań for engine maintenance, citing their existing experience with Leopard 2 engines. Despite official statements suggesting that work is proceeding according to schedule, internal correspondence indicates disagreements that may impact the established timeline for local production capabilities.
