Poland and Lithuania increase investment in civil defense infrastructure
Poland and Lithuania are increasing investments in civil defense infrastructure to enhance public safety during crises and armed conflicts.
In Poland’s Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, over 140 million PLN has been allocated to the Population Protection and Civil Defense Program. The initiative aims to create 5,200 new shelter spaces and approximately 40 storage facilities for emergency equipment by the end of the year. Voivode Józef Bryk noted that these investments serve both potential armed conflicts and climate-related threats.
In Lithuania, the Ministry of the Interior is proposing an additional 16 million euros to modernize existing shelters. Under a new regulation proposed by Minister Martynas Katelynas, the average funding per shelter will increase from 40,000 to 55,000 euros, with a maximum of 155,000 euros per facility. Total funding from the State Defense Fund for shelter infrastructure is expected to rise from 77 million to 90 million euros by 2030. The upgrades will focus on quality and accessibility, including features like emergency lighting, toilets, and accommodations for persons with disabilities.
