Poland and U.S. advance talks on permanent military base

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that significant progress has been made toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base in Poland. Trump credited the leadership of Polish President Karol Nawrocki for the advancement of these negotiations, describing the potential move as a historic step for the U.S.-Poland alliance.

If implemented, the permanent base would shift the current rotational presence of approximately 10,000 U.S. service members to a fixed deployment. One proposal suggests the base could involve around 5,000 soldiers and their families. Potential locations under consideration include Poznań, Powidz, Wrocław, and Oleśnica. The specific site is expected to be announced very soon.

Polish officials, including Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, have expressed readiness to host a permanent American presence, viewing it as a vital security investment for NATO’s eastern flank. The estimated cost for hosting the permanent presence is between 15 and 17 billion zlotys. Poland currently allocates approximately 4.8 percent of its GDP to defense to support regional security.
