Poland adopts 2027 budget project with record defense spending

The Polish government has adopted the state budget project for 2027, which features significant allocations for national defense and infrastructure. Defense spending is projected at 198.1 billion PLN, approximately 4.51% of GDP. While this is a high figure, it represents a nominal decrease from 2026 levels, prompting debate among political figures regarding whether defense spending should reach 5% of GDP.

Other key budget components include 103 billion PLN for infrastructure (roads and railways), 274.1 billion PLN for healthcare, and over 60 billion PLN for the 800+ program. The budget also includes 283.56 million PLN for the Church Fund.

Financial experts and the Fiscal Council have raised concerns regarding rising public debt, warning of potential risks to the debt-to-GDP ratio. Meanwhile, a dispute has emerged regarding the Constitutional Tribunal, as the government's budget draft did not include specific funds for the institution due to a lack of finalized financial information from the Tribunal's judges. In response, Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski has submitted a financial plan to the Sejm, citing a state of necessity to ensure the court's continued operation.

Additionally, President Karol Nawrocki has called for immediate fuel price reductions following the signing of a law regarding excess profits from fuel corporations, emphasizing that the benefits must reach citizens without delay.
