Poland announces major railway investments and satellite internet trials
During the 15th European New Ideas Forum, Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak highlighted a resurgence in rail travel, noting that passenger numbers are reaching their highest levels in 30 years. He announced a major investment program by PKP PLK, aiming to invest over 180 billion PLN in railway infrastructure by 2032.
In a discussion regarding railway security and technology, Alan Beroud, CEO of PKP SA and Chairman of the Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), addressed the need for system resilience against cyberattacks and sabotage. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between railway companies and domestic and international services.
Additionally, PKP Intercity has successfully completed initial tests of Eutelsat OneWeb satellite connectivity on trains traveling at 160 km/h. This technology provides stable internet access in areas where traditional ground networks are unreliable. A three-month pilot program involving passengers on Pendolino ED250 trains is scheduled to begin in October 2026.
