Poland announces new nature reserve and Bełchatów mine reclamation plans

In Poland, new environmental and land management developments are taking place in the Wielkopolska and Łódź regions. The Dolina Lutyni Nature Reserve has been officially established in the Jarocin municipality. Covering approximately 77 hectares, the reserve is designed to provide high-level protection for unique landscape, geological, and botanical features, with human intervention limited to essential maintenance.

In Bełchatów, plans have been formalized for the reclamation of the Bełchatów open-pit mine following the cessation of extraction at the Pole Bełchatów site later this year. The project, initiated by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna, aims to transform the area into a large recreational water and forest complex. The plan includes creating a 1,556-hectare reservoir and reclaiming 410 hectares of surrounding land for forestry. Additionally, the site's drainage system is intended to support potential future nuclear energy developments in the region by providing necessary cooling water.
