Poland proposes stricter penalties for railway crossing violations
The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure is preparing urgent legislative changes to increase safety at railway crossings. This move follows a fatal accident in Sokolnikach Suche, where a truck collided with a PKP Intercity train, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
Key proposed sanctions include an automatic three-month driving license suspension for motorists who enter a crossing against a red light, bypass lowered barriers, or enter when there is no space to continue driving. For more severe offenses, such as causing a communication disaster, the government is considering mandatory driving bans of at least three years and potential imprisonment.
Additionally, the Ministry plans to expand the authority of the Railway Protection Guard, allowing them to issue fines similar to the police. Current penalties for crossing violations include a 2,000 PLN fine and 15 penalty points, which can increase to 4,000 PLN for repeat offenders. Data shows that drivers are responsible for 99 percent of railway crossing accidents.
