Poland arrests Ukrainian national for attempted assassination of defense official
Polish authorities and the Internal Security Agency (ABW) have arrested a Ukrainian national in Warsaw suspected of attempting to assassinate an official from the Ukrainian defense industry. The suspect, identified as Serhii P., allegedly acted on behalf of Russian intelligence services.
According to investigators, the suspect placed an improvised explosive device under a vehicle used by the target in Irpin, near Kyiv. The device was intended to be detonated remotely via a mobile phone but failed to trigger due to a malfunction. Following the failed attempt, the suspect fled to Poland, where he was apprehended.
The ABW stated that the case “demonstrates that Russian intelligence services conduct operations that transcend national borders and exploit individuals traveling between countries.” Serhii P. faces charges of attempted murder using explosives and illegal possession of explosives, which could result in a sentence of up to 15 years or life imprisonment. This incident follows a recent arrest in Poland of a Russian citizen accused of being recruited by Moscow to assassinate a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw.
