Poland begins construction of first offshore gas terminal near Gdańsk
Poland is constructing its first offshore gas terminal near Gdańsk to bolster energy security and reduce European vulnerability to Russian gas supplies. The project involves the installation of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in the Baltic Sea.
Construction has faced significant environmental and historical challenges. Polish navy minesweepers were required to clear unexploded mines and bombs from World War II before work could begin. Additionally, builders must contend with severe storms and winter sea ice.
Following the invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent cessation of Russian gas deliveries, Poland has shifted toward global energy markets. The initiative aims to transform Poland into an energy hub for Eastern Europe, supporting the broader energy diversification goals of the European Union and its Baltic neighbors.
