Poland brand promotion crisis follows controversial AI-linked report
A political crisis has emerged in Poland following the resignation of Barbara Mróz-Gorgoń from her position as government plenipotentiary for the promotion of the ‘Poland Brand’. Her resignation was triggered by intense criticism of the ‘Polaków portret własny’ (Portrait of Poles) report, published by the Marek Polska Think Tank. The document was found to contain numerous linguistic and substantive errors, with evidence suggesting that artificial intelligence was used to generate significant portions of the text without adequate human editorial oversight.
The controversy has led to scrutiny of government officials, specifically Piotr Borys, the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Sport and Tourism. While coalition members are discussing responsibility for Mróz-Gorgoń’s nomination, no decision has been made regarding Borys’s dismissal. The Ministry of Sport and Tourism has clarified that it did not commission or fund the controversial report and has demanded that the Foundation remove the Ministry’s logo from the document.
Academic and legal implications are also unfolding. The University of Economics in Wrocław, where Mróz-Gorgoń is a professor, is reviewing the matter according to internal procedures. Additionally, the prosecutor's office is involved due to concerns regarding the unauthorized use of the Ministry's logo and misleading information suggesting public funding for the report. Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka stated that there are currently no immediate plans to appoint a new plenipotentiary.
