Poland calls for stricter EU migration rules at Munich summit

During a migration summit in Munich, Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński called for stricter European Union regulations and reinforced controls on the EU’s external borders. Kierwiński argued that the current EU Migration and Asylum Pact fails to address contemporary challenges.

He proposed that the measures Poland has implemented to protect its borders, including the temporary suspension of asylum rights during periods of hybrid pressure, could serve as a model for Europe. He also emphasized the necessity of more effective procedures for the return of migrants.

The summit included interior ministers from 18 European countries, as well as EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner. Participating nations included Germany, France, Austria, the Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom. The meeting aimed to advance political progress regarding border protection, the reduction of illegal migration, and more efficient return processes.
