Poland: Cemetery conduct and tombstone care guidelines
As All Saints' Day approaches in Poland, visitors to cemeteries are advised to follow specific regulations and maintenance guidelines to avoid legal penalties and property damage.
Regarding legal conduct, consuming alcohol in public cemeteries is prohibited under the Act on Upbringing in Sobriety and Counteracting Alcoholism. While typical fines for such violations are around 100 PLN, cases referred to court can result in fines reaching up to 5,000 PLN. Additionally, visitors should consult individual cemetery regulations, particularly concerning rules for bringing pets onto the grounds.
For tombstone maintenance, experts warn against using harsh chemicals such as bleach, toilet cleaners, or acidic products containing chlorine. These substances can cause permanent discoloration or structural damage to stone surfaces. Instead, specialists recommend using products specifically designed for materials like granite, or mild household alternatives such as diluted dish soap, glass cleaner, or baking soda applied with a soft microfiber cloth.
