Poland commemorates 42nd anniversary of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko's death

Commemorations were held across Poland on October 19, 2026, to mark the 42nd anniversary of the martyrdom of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, the chaplain of the Solidarity movement. The events coincided with the National Day of Remembrance for Unyielding Clergy.

In Warsaw, central ceremonies took place at the Sanctuary of Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in Żoliborz. The Holy Mass was led by Archbishop Adrian Galbas, who emphasized Popiełuszko's inner freedom despite living under a communist regime. Attendees included family members, state and local government officials, leadership from NSZZ Solidarity, and various political figures, including Jarosław Kaczyński.

In Kielce, ceremonies were held at the Kielce Cathedral Basilica. The Mass was presided over by Father Marian Janus, a close colleague of Popiełuszko who served with him in a specialized military unit for clerics in Bartoszyce during the 1960s. Following the liturgy, participants honored Popiełuszko's memory at his monument near the cathedral, praying for his swift canonization.
