Poland commemorates 70 years since Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński's release
The 70th anniversary of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński's return to Warsaw from internment is being observed. On October 28, 1956, the Primate of Poland returned to the capital following three years of isolation imposed by communist authorities.
Wyszyński was arrested on September 25, 1953, without formal charges or a trial. His internment was a response to the Polish Episcopate's opposition to a state decree that granted the government authority over the appointment of church officials. This resistance was documented in the historic “Non possumus” memorial sent by the hierarchy on May 8, 1953.
During his three years of detention, Wyszyński was held in various locations, including Rywałd, Stoczek Warmiński, Prudnik Śląski, and Komańcza. His reflections from this period were later published as “Zapiski więzienne” (Prison Notes), serving as both a historical record and a spiritual diary.
