Poland commemorates death of Solidarity priest Jerzy Popiełuszko

Commemorations are being held across Poland to mark the 42nd anniversary of the death of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko, a spiritual leader of the Solidarity movement.

In Warsaw, a solemn Mass was led by Archbishop Adrian Galbas at the Church of St. Stanislaus Kostka, attended by the priest's family and representatives from the Solidarity trade union. Popiełuszko, born in 1947, became a symbol of resistance against the communist regime through his ‘Masses for the Homeland,’ which provided spiritual support to workers during martial law.

In the regions of Górsko and Włocławek, where the priest was kidnapped and killed, local residents, officials, and believers gathered for memorial services. In Górsko, participants held a Way of the Cross near a symbolic memorial cross. In Włocławek, hundreds of people, including worker delegations, participated in a procession with the priest's relics near the Vistula dam.

Popiełuszko was abducted on October 19, 1984, by officers of the communist-era Security Service (SB). He was beaten and subsequently thrown into the Vistula River near the Włocławek dam. His death remains a significant moment in Polish history, and he was declared the patron of the Solidarity movement by the Pope in 2006.
