Poland confronts Russia after airspace violation by Russian helicopter
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed the UN Security Council following an incident where a Russian Mi-8 helicopter from the Kaliningrad region entered Polish airspace. The aircraft reportedly penetrated approximately 300 metres into Polish territory for 42 seconds, prompting Warsaw to scramble fighter jets and increase ground-based defense readiness.
Sikorski stated that while such errors can occur between neighbors, the responsible party must acknowledge the mistake. He characterized recent activities as Russian provocations intended to escalate hybrid warfare against NATO. During his address, Sikorski directly confronted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, telling him to inform his leadership that ‘enough is enough’ and asserting that Russia cannot win the war in Ukraine despite its ability to cause loss of life.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk noted that Russian strikes near the Polish border have necessitated the evacuation of border crossings at Hrubieszow and Dorohusk. Tusk warned that the upcoming autumn and winter seasons may be critical periods for regional security.
