Poland considers Airbus A400M acquisition for strategic airlift

Poland is considering the acquisition of Airbus A400M heavy transport aircraft to bolster its strategic airlift and aerial refueling capabilities. Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed that the Defense Ministry is in discussions regarding the aircraft, which would support both operational requirements and NATO obligations.

Reports suggest Poland may seek to purchase between 8 and 15 aircraft. The government is exploring the possibility of using the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) financing mechanism to fund the acquisition. This potential purchase is distinct from the country’s ongoing DROP program, which seeks a medium transport aircraft to replace the current C-130 Hercules fleet.

Poland’s interest follows its participation in a multinational A400M initiative announced during the NATO summit in Ankara, alongside nations including Belgium, Croatia, France, Spain, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to enhance strategic airlift capacity through a pooling and sharing model involving joint training, maintenance, and logistics.
