Poland considers alcohol sale ban in sanatoriums and medical facilities

The Polish Sejm is considering new legislation that would implement a total ban on alcohol sales within medical facilities and locations providing health services. This proposed regulation is part of a broader package aimed at restricting alcohol promotion, introducing nighttime sales bans, and increasing permit fees.

The spa and sanatorium industry, including the Union of Polish Spas, has expressed strong opposition. Many sanatoriums operate under a mixed model, combining medical treatments funded by the National Health Fund (NFZ) with hotel and tourism services. Industry representatives warn that a ban on alcohol sales in onsite restaurants and cafes could significantly reduce revenue and the attractiveness of commercial stays.

Separately, data regarding sanatorium costs shows that patients utilizing NFZ-funded treatments can benefit from lower rates during the low season, which runs from October to April. For a standard 21-day stay in a single studio room, the difference between the high and low seasons can result in savings of approximately 237 PLN.
