Polish lawmakers seek ban on small-format alcohol bottles

While there is broad agreement on the need to act, a formal amendment to the law has not yet been submitted. A primary obstacle is the requirement to notify the European Commission of technical regulations regarding packaging, a process that involves a standstill period of several months. To bypass these procedural delays, some politicians are considering alternative measures, such as a significant increase in excise tax for small bottles or implementing a deposit system for the packaging.
The issue is expected to return to the Sejm in September, with discussions potentially shifting toward a dedicated, cross-party legislative project to ensure legal compliance with EU regulations.
