Poland considers converting BWP-1 vehicles into unmanned platforms

Brigadier General Grzegorz Potrzuski, Head of the P5 Directorate of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, has proposed a strategic reuse for the retiring BWP-1 infantry fighting vehicles. While mass modernization of the fleet as traditional combat vehicles is considered illogical due to outdated armor, weaponry, and ergonomics, Potrzuski suggests adapting the most functional hulls for unmanned roles.

By converting selected BWP-1 chassis into remotely operated vehicles, the military could deploy them for high-risk tasks such as logistical support, medical evacuation (CASEVAC), or as platforms for heavy electronic warfare (WRE) systems. This approach aims to reduce the exposure of Polish soldiers to FPV drone threats in combat zones.

However, the proposal emphasizes the need for a strict cost-benefit analysis to ensure that the expenses of adapting these older hulls do not exceed the cost of acquiring modern, purpose-built vehicles.
