Poland considers harsher prison sentences for fatal speeding accidents

Lawmakers in Poland have introduced a legislative proposal to significantly increase penalties for drivers who cause fatal accidents while exceeding speed limits by at least 100 km/h. The project, introduced by members of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, seeks to raise potential prison sentences from the current range to between 8 and 25 years.

The initiative follows public outcry regarding a high-profile tragedy on the A1 motorway, where a driver traveling at over 300 km/h caused a crash that killed three people. The defendant in that case received an 8-year sentence, which was the maximum possible under the laws in effect at the time of the offense. Under current updated regulations, such an act would carry a 10-year sentence, but the new proposal aims for much higher deterrents.

While PiS members argue that speeding drivers turn vehicles into "projectiles," the ruling coalition has offered ambiguous responses. Representatives from Polski 2050 indicated that they may work toward a version of the law that is deemed appropriate during parliamentary proceedings.
