Poland considers new fees for large vehicles and SUVs
Municipalities and cities in Poland are exploring new ways to manage urban space as passenger vehicles become increasingly larger and heavier. Due to the rising popularity of SUVs and large family cars, urban centers face challenges with limited parking availability and narrow streets. Projections suggest that Warsaw could lose up to 17,500 parking spaces by 2040 if vehicle sizes continue to grow, potentially necessitating costly infrastructure redesigns.
To address these issues, officials are discussing financial measures such as additional taxes, increased parking fees, or special rates based on a vehicle's mass and dimensions.
Separately, drivers are being reminded of strict regulations regarding parking near pedestrian crossings. Under Polish traffic law, parking within 10 meters of a pedestrian crossing is prohibited to ensure visibility. Violations can result in fines ranging from 100 to 300 PLN, five penalty points, and the potential removal of the vehicle by tow truck at the owner's expense.
