Poland considers US permanent military base in western region, Szczecin a leading candidate

Polish defence officials said the United States is evaluating locations for a permanent military base in western Poland. Deputy defence minister Stanisław Wziątek indicated that the site will likely be in the west, citing Szczecin as an attractive option because of its proximity to Germany, a deep‑water port and extensive road and rail links. The proposed facility would host 3,000‑5,000 U.S. service members and their families, creating a community of roughly 30,000 people. Wziątek added that the base would need civilian infrastructure such as schools, health care and recreational amenities.

Poland’s vice‑premier and defence minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz confirmed that Warsaw is ready to provide land and make the necessary investments, describing the project as a multi‑billion‑dollar, long‑term endeavour aimed at strengthening deterrence against Russia. Around 10,000 U.S. troops are currently stationed in Poland on a rotational basis, and Polish officials hope a permanent presence will reinforce NATO’s eastern flank. No final site has been selected; the process will involve further analyses, negotiations with Washington and coordination with local authorities.
