Poland consumer debt reaches 40.2 billion PLN
Data from the National Debt Register (Krajowy Rejestr Długów) reveals that nearly 1.9 million consumers in Poland are in debt, totaling 40.2 billion PLN. The debt profile varies significantly across different age demographics.
The largest concentration of debt is held by individuals aged 36 to 65. This group includes approximately 1.2 million debtors with a combined total of 31.2 billion PLN, averaging 26.7 thousand PLN per person. Consumers under the age of 35 account for 5.8 billion PLN in total debt, with an average of 11.5 thousand PLN per person. Meanwhile, seniors over the age of 65 hold 3.2 billion PLN in debt, averaging 17.1 thousand PLN per person.
Beyond the amounts, age also influences how debtors interact with debt collection agencies. Younger individuals tend to seek information online when contacted, whereas seniors are often more hesitant to engage due to fears of fraud.
In a related economic context, data from GUS indicates that the average gross monthly salary in the enterprise sector was 9,259.54 PLN in August 2026, representing a 5.6 percent nominal increase compared to the previous year.
