Poland debates EU ETS amid energy cost and revenue disputes

The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) remains a central point of debate regarding EU climate policy. While critics argue the system increases energy costs and impacts industrial competitiveness, proponents view it as a vital mechanism for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, driving modernization, and enhancing energy security by reducing fossil fuel dependence.

In Poland, political tension has emerged over the system. Przemysław Czarnek, Vice President of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, has called for a plan to withdraw Poland from the ETS, citing high electricity prices. However, analysts from Forum Energii note that the system also serves as a significant source of state revenue; for instance, Poland generated 17 billion PLN from the sale of emission allowances in a single year.
