Poland deer rutting season increases road safety risks
The deer rutting season has begun in Poland, leading to increased activity among deer populations and heightened risks for motorists. In the Beskid Mountains, particularly around the UNESCO-recognized Babiogórski Park Narodowy, stags are becoming increasingly aggressive as they compete for mates, a process marked by loud roaring and territorial battles.
Police and foresters are issuing warnings to drivers, especially those traveling near forested areas during dawn and dusk when animal movement is most intense. Experts note that stags may travel long distances and ignore oncoming traffic, creating a significant danger of collisions. A collision with a deer, which can weigh up to 200 kilograms, poses a lethal threat to vehicle occupants.
Authorities advise drivers to reduce speed and remain vigilant, noting that seeing one deer often indicates others are nearby. In the event of a collision, officials recommend securing the scene, not approaching injured animals due to their strength and potential shock, and immediately contacting emergency services via 112.
