Poland deploys FA-50GF fighter jets for combat readiness
Poland's FA-50GF light fighter jets have officially entered combat readiness status to bolster security along the country's eastern border. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the move, noting that the deployment serves as an additional reinforcement for the region.
Although the aircraft were initially purchased without weaponry, Poland has acquired the necessary armaments for national defense missions. This includes the acquisition of AIM-9L Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles. While the aircraft currently utilize older missile variants such as the AIM-9L, M, and P, the Polish Air Force plans to integrate European short-range missiles, specifically IRIS-T or AIM-132 ASRAAM, to maintain combat capabilities.
Originally intended as temporary aircraft to be upgraded to the PL variant capable of firing AIM-9X missiles, recent assessments suggest such an upgrade may not be economically feasible. Consequently, the FA-50GF fleet will primarily be used for pilot training while maintaining basic combat capabilities for readiness duties.
