Poland's economy posts consumer spending surge and higher refinery output
Polish consumer spending accelerated in June 2026, with retail sales rising 6.2 % year‑on‑year, driven by a 14.8 % jump in furniture and electronics purchases and a 9.6 % rise in vehicle sales, according to GUS data. Online sales grew 12.3 % and now account for 9.1 % of total retail turnover.
Orlen’s refineries processed 9.17 million tonnes of crude in the second quarter, 7 % less than a year earlier, with capacity utilisation at 86 %. Retail fuel sales increased 2 % to 2.94 million tonnes, electricity generation rose 3 % to 3.9 TWh and gas distribution grew 5 % to 6.2 TWh.
The Warsaw Stock Exchange’s WIG20 index gained roughly 0.5 % and approached the historic high of 3 940 points, aided by strong performance in energy firms such as PGE. These developments together signal robust domestic demand and buoyant market sentiment within Poland.
