Poland develops new cryptoasset regulations following legislative delays

Poland is working toward new regulations for the cryptoasset market following several legislative setbacks. Although the European Union requires Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) authorization starting July 1, 2026, Poland has yet to pass a domestic law defining supervisory bodies and specific sanctions.

Despite the lack of a dedicated crypto law, the current legal landscape is not a lawless zone. Entities providing virtual currency services remain subject to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations and must implement financial security measures. Violations of these duties can lead to imprisonment. Furthermore, the Penal Code applies to fraud, misappropriation, and money laundering on crypto platforms regardless of licensing status.

The government is currently developing a fourth version of a cryptoasset bill, which is expected to emerge in October. This follows a period of legislative friction, including a presidential veto and a failed attempt by the Sejm to override it. The upcoming government draft is expected to be more stringent than previous versions to address market security and potential sabotage risks.
