Poland diplomatic dispute intensifies over US ambassador proposal
A political dispute has intensified between Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidential Palace regarding diplomatic appointments. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski claimed that President Karol Nawrocki proposed Nikodem Rachoń as the candidate for the Polish Ambassador to the United States.
Marcin Przydacz, head of the Presidential International Policy Bureau, challenged Sikorski's account. Przydacz stated that an agreement regarding ambassadors had been accepted by Sikorski but was subsequently blocked by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He suggested two possibilities: either Sikorski had previously agreed to Rachoń's nomination only to have it blocked by the Prime Minister, or Sikorski is being untruthful about Rachoń being the agreed-upon candidate.
The disagreement is part of a broader, ongoing conflict between the Ministry and the Presidency over ambassadorial nominations that began in early 2024. Currently, the Polish mission in Washington is led by a chargé d'affaires, as the Palace opposes the current leadership.
