Poland divorce rates show marriages last 15 years on average

Data from Statistics Poland (GUS) indicates that the average marriage in Poland lasts approximately 15 years before ending in divorce. In 2025, courts ruled on over 60,000 divorces and approximately 600 separations.

Divorce rates are significantly higher in urban areas, where the number of divorces is nearly three times higher and separations are twice as frequent compared to rural regions. The primary cause for marital breakdown is personality incompatibility, accounting for nearly 60 percent of cases, followed by infidelity and alcoholism.

A notable trend observed over the last 25 years is the increase in divorces among long-term marriages. The percentage of individuals divorcing after age 50 and at least 30 years of marriage has more than doubled, rising from 4 percent in 2000 to 9 percent in 2025.

Demographically, the average divorced woman is 42 years old, lives in a city, and has a secondary or higher education. The average divorced man is 44 years old, lives in a city, and has a secondary education. Women initiate divorce proceedings in two out of three cases, and 85 percent of divorces are settled amicably without a court ruling on fault.
