Poland ecologists urge removal of invasive Tree of Heaven
Ecologists and environmental authorities in Poland are urging the removal of the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima), an invasive species originating from China and northern Vietnam. Although once used as an ornamental plant, it is now recognized as a significant threat to local ecosystems because it displaces native species and releases substances that inhibit the growth of neighboring plants.
The General Directorate for Environmental Protection warns that the species can damage infrastructure, including foundations, sewage systems, and road surfaces. Under European Union and Polish law, the Tree of Heaven is classified as an invasive alien species. Consequently, there is a prohibition on its introduction, cultivation, and sale without permission, and Polish law allows for its cutting without requiring specific permits, regardless of the tree's age or size.
