Poland energy sector faces coal extensions, massive lake plans, and multi-billion PLN legal disputes

Poland is navigating a complex energy transition involving shifts in coal usage, massive infrastructure investments, and legal disputes. The government is considering extending the operation of certain coal mines and power plants for 10 to 15 years to bolster energy security, though officials note that many older coal units lack the economic justification for modernization.

In the Bełchatów region, plans are advancing to transform exhausted mining areas into a large-scale ecological complex. Following the cessation of coal extraction at the Bełchatów Field, PGE GiEK intends to create a 1,556-hectare water reservoir surrounded by forested land to restore the area's environmental and social value.

Simultaneously, the sector faces significant financial and legal pressures. PG Silesia has filed a lawsuit against the Polish State, seeking approximately 5.1 billion PLN in compensation for losses allegedly caused by state-led emergency coal imports in 2022. Furthermore, experts estimate that the decarbonization of Poland's heating sector could require between 200 billion PLN by 2040 and up to 500 billion PLN by 2050, highlighting the immense capital requirements and regulatory challenges posed by the EU ETS system.
